Washing your face is like brushing your teeth: You can do it quickly and sloppily, but you are probably going to pay for it.

Every night before you go to bed you wash your face. It’s the most necessary part of your skincare routine, but it’s also the step that some people take for granted. Since you’ve been doing it daily since you were little, it’s likely the process is second nature to you. However, no matter how well you feel like you’re cleaning your skin, you might be doing it wrong.

Whether your skin is acne-prone, dry and delicate, or somewhere in between, you should learn how to wash with the right technique. If you wash your face when extremely tired, or complete the process too quick, you could be harming your skin more than helping it. 

So follow the rules below for the best face wash possible. 

Step 1: Choose the correct cleanser

People with oily or combined skin type should go for cleansers that are stronger (those that contain ingredients that absorb oil). People with sensitive or dry skin should go for milder formulas that have moisturizing and nourishing ingredients.

Step 2: Wash your hands

Dirty hands can transfer oil, bacteria and dirt to your face, so start by cleaning your hands with antibacterial soap.

Step 3: Use lukewarm water.

Unfortunately, washing with hot water can be drying and harsh to the skin. So it is best to start your wash by rinsing your face with lukewarm water. Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and cold water can cause your skin to tighten up. Warm water is always your best bet.

Step 4: Massage your face in a correct motion

Start cleaning the face from your forehead then work down to the nose area, the cheek areas and down to the chin and neck.

Step 5: Moisturize

You have heard it once, you have heard it twice, but do you actually moisturize? Look at using moisturizer as the final step to washing your face. 

While it may seem like a lot of to-do’s for a simple act of cleansing, it’s more a matter of retraining yourself on the basics in order to get the best results.
